Let’s Talk About Pins
Have you ever stood in front of a display of notions and wished that you could find a magic something-or-other that would help you with each and every quilting project? May I suggest you consider the lowly pin??
Students frequently tell me how much they hate to pin – it takes up time and hinders their progress more than it helps. One look at the pins they are using, and I have to agree. The ideal pin for piecing traditional patterns is of medium length (1-3/8”); it is fine (.5mm diameter) and it is sharp. Additionally I like a pin with a glass head. Some brand names that I look for are Nifty Notions and IBC.
Blunt pins are discarded. Large “telephone pole” pins are reserved for bulletin board use.
When the pattern is more detailed – I use Clover Patchwork pins. These are extra fine (.4mm diameter) and will bend easily, but they are wonderful when six or eight points come together. These pins have yellow or turquoise heads.
Once you have purchased the proper pin – placement is the next consideration. Pins can control bias, manage perimeters, and provide visual cues. All that from a pin?? You bet – hope to see you in class!
